Smell is the only one of your 5 senses that accesses the limbic system of your brain (the amygdala) where you store emotional memory, fear and trauma. This means that smell can help you to release emotions, in order to achieve greater emotional balance.
When you inhale an essential oil, it enters the blood stream from your nasal and buccal cavity, and is absorbed into the limbic system of your brain. Here it activates the amygdala, and exerts a harmonizing effect. For example, I’ve noticed that within seconds of smelling an essential oil, I experience an elevation in “mood” or emotion (including, at times, an emotional release). This is also reflected in an increase in the size of the aura.
Some essential oils (like Frankincense, Sandalwood and Cedarwood) contain compounds called “sesquiterpenes”. These compounds are able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Because they are missing an oxygen molecule, they naturally attract and bind to free-ranging oxygen, and in turn carry it to your tissues and brain! This oxygen stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands of the brain, explaining why many people love to anoint themselves with essential oils prior to meditation, to facilitate a heightened state of meditation.
Pure, unadulterated essential oils are one of the greatest tools available for emotional wellbeing. When you experience a 'negative' emotion (eg. pain, fear, anger, anxiety, depression) an acidic condition is created in your body chemistry. This activates the transcriptase enzyme, which transcribes that emotion onto the RNA template in your cells, and this in turn stores it in the DNA (locking it into your body as an emotional memory, or 'pattern').
Inhaling essential oils neutralises the acidity of the body, ensuring that the transcriptase enzyme does not 'code' a response onto the RNA and DNA, so that you no longer reinforce painful emotional patterns. Essential oils may be used every time you experience painful emotions, helping you co-create harmony, balance and emotional health. Two fabulous books to assist in this area are: "Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils" by Carolyn Mein, and “Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit” by Gabriel Mojay. Click here to order.
With such a wide range of positive effects, is it any wonder that experts describe essential oils as acting with an “innate intelligence”. Click here to learn more.
